The Soles4Souls project is a non-profit organization committed to fighting poverty through the collection and distribution of shoes and clothes. The organization accomplishes its mission by collecting new and used shoes and clothing from schools, individuals, faith-based institutions and corporate partners. It then distributes the clothing and shoes through donations and micro-enterprises designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities … The University of Alabama chapter was founded in spring 2014.
Two startups graduate from Tuscaloosa incubator

Two new companies have graduated from The Edge in Tuscaloosa – the city’s main business incubator … Ugo, an app-based convenience store delivery service, began in 2015 and has fine tuned its delivery times to under 20 minutes. Ugo founder John G. Newman II said the service is gaining in popularity among University of Alabama students. SWJ Breilmann, an engineering, planning and project management firm is led by Wolgang Kneer and provides streamlining products and services to major German automotive manufacturers. So far, the company has worked on more than 5,000 projects worldwide. The Edge is a collaborative effort between the University of Alabama, the City of Tuscaloosa and the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama.
UA Adapted Athletics Assistant Director featured in a documentary

Several athletes at The University of Alabama’s Adapted Athletics Department are the stars of a brand new documentary screening in Tuscaloosa this week. “Trials: Finding the Medal” follows four para-rowers across the country, while they train for a spot on the U.S. National Rowing Team The adapted athletics co-founder and assistant director says it’s all about recognizing their accomplishments.
UA student group going to Louisiana to help flood victims

A University of Alabama ministry is sending 30 volunteers to hard hit Louisiana. Members of Tide For Christ will spend Labor Day weekend helping families who lost everything in those flood waters. They are partnering with South Baton Rouge Church of Christ to pass out supplies and help homeowners try to start over.
UA Gymnastics team helps collect donations for Louisiana flood victims

The University of Alabama gymnastics team is partnering with Read Bama Read and Two Men and a Truck to collect as many donations as they can. The group is focusing on collecting cleaning and kitchen supplies, toiletries and linens. The donations will be taken to Denham Springs, Louisiana on Friday.
Weeden Elementary featured in movie trailer/documentary

Weeden Elementary fourth-graders Kamarie Cherry, Yocelin Rabadan and Ian Howard took their seats in the front of the class to view the latest movie trailer to hit Carmike Cinemas — starring the three of them. Beginning last Friday, moviegoers in Alabama will see a 30-second trailer promoting a new website, ALstandardsmovie.org, and a 14-minute documentary showcasing how students in Alabama are learning math … The trailer gives a quick glance of the more detailed minidocumentary featuring Florence and Athens schools and the University of Alabama.
Former Fullbright scholar offers advice to students

Whether it’s teaching, researching or studying that inspires a student, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program allows American undergraduates and graduates to plunge into a new culture to do what they love most. The binational program offers two different grants, the Study/Research grant and the English Teaching Assistantship grant, that send the winning applicants on an eight to 10-month long journey to a country of their choice to fulfill their passion. Fulbright scholarships include roundtrip airfare, monthly stipend, accident and sickness insurance and several other benefits … Jilisa Milton, Fulbright Alumni Ambassador, former Fulbright winner and UA graduate, spoke to UA students about the Fulbright application process and her nine-month experience in Indonesia. After participating in the extensive application process, Milton went to Indonesia for the 2014 – 2015 school year.
