Students begin moving onto University of Alabama campus

Thursday, thousands of University of Alabama students will begin moving back into dorms on campus. But many are getting a head start. Haley Cotton is just one of dozens of new freshmen students moving into the Julia Tutwiler dormitory. Many families like hers spent Tuesday afternoon moving their kids into dorms on campus. Cotton says she is ready and eager to begin her new journey at Alabama. “It is a lot of people and it is going to be a lot different than living with your parents,” she said. “I am an only child but now I am going to be living with 14 floors of all girls.”

Alabama sets Fan Day for Sunday

The University of Alabama has set its annual football Fan Day for Sunday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The defending national champion Crimson Tide will hold a two-hour open practice starting at 2:30, with players and coaches available for autographs immediately afterward at approximately 4:45 p.m. The autograph session with head coach Nick Saban, assistant coaches and players will last for 45 minutes. The gate to the field will open once the autograph session has been set up. Fans will be limited to one item per person for autographs and no posed photographs will be permitted.

Olympics offer rare chance for NCAA athletes to be paid

Kyle Snyder couldn’t get much more than an athletic scholarship from Ohio State this past school year, when he won an NCAA wrestling title for the Buckeyes as a sophomore. But he did get paid by somebody else to wrestle … “It is a different set of rules,” for Olympic-caliber athletes, said Gene Marsh, a University of Alabama law professor emeritus who has served on the NCAA Division I Infractions Committee and now represents schools, coaches and athletes in compliance matters.

Tuscaloosa County Chapter of UA National Alumni Association is getting ready for kickoff party

The Tuscaloosa County Chapter of The University of Alabama National Alumni Association is getting ready to host its annual kickoff party. The Tuscaloosa County Chapter is open to all alumni, friends and fans living in Tuscaloosa county, and surrounding counties that do not have a local chapter. They are one of the largest and most active chapters in the country. When they are not watching the Tide roll, they raise a lot of money for scholarships. Helen Smith, President of the Tuscaloosa County Chapter says, “The Tuscaloosa County Chapter gave this past May to area students $107,000 in scholarships. That far surpasses what any other chapter in the country does right now.”
