Some freshmen at the University of Alabama are making an impact in their community before fall classes start. “Just out here having a great time and trying to do what we can for the community and introduce these freshmen to an experience that we hope they’ll continue through service,” Kyle Campbell said. On Tuesday, 150 Honors College freshmen spruced up Vance Elementary School.

The Canton Bluecoats maintained their top-ranked drum corps position after winning a West Virginia show last week, then loaded a bus for Newark … Josh Meyer, a fifth-year Bluecoat studying music education at the University of Alabama, took 21 credit hours and tested out of other classes so he could have the summer free. His music program typically takes five years with summer work, but he is doing it in four years with the drum corps. He took an interest in the Bluecoats after seeing a DCI show in 2010.

At the emergency room the next day, doctors gave her Motrin and sent her home … Beverly E. Thorn, a University of Alabama psychology professor, led a study of low-income patients to see how well group cognitive behavioral therapy relieved pain compared with only medical treatment. One study, in 2004, found that workers’ compensation programs spent less to treat blacks with lower back injuries, and that the treatment periods for blacks were shorter, regardless of income level.

Arizona is one of three states — Maine and South Dakota are the others — that will ask voters in November to approve a minimum-wage increase … Michael Saltsman, a research fellow at the Employment Policies Institute, cited a study from economists at the University of Alabama and East Carolina University that found “2.5 times more Americans would have been lifted out of poverty if there had been an expansion of the federal EITC between 2007 and 2009 instead of an increase to the minimum wage.
James Spann chosen to be inducted into UA’s College of Communication and Information Sciences Hall of Fame
