Tuneful treatment: Alabama grad brings music therapy practice to hometown

It’s music time at the Little Tree Preschool in the United Cerebral Palsy building at McClellan. About nine children sit on the floor in a semi-circle, aides and teachers behind them. Lauren Key leads the group in ocean-themed activities. But this isn’t any lesson. Key is a board-certified music therapist, one of 45 in the state according to the Certification Board of Music Therapists. She is providing therapy to the students at the preschool, which serves children with special needs and those who develop typically. Music therapists use music to change behavior or accomplish specific goals, according to Andrea Cevasco-Trotter, director of the music therapy program at the University of Alabama.
 
Peyton Brown, Miss Alabama USA 2016, makes top 5 of Miss USA Pageant
WTVY (Dothan) – June 6
Eufaula native Peyton Brown made the top 5 in Sunday night’s Miss USA Pageant. She was one of 52 contestants competing for the crown in the 65th annual competition held in Las Vegas. She joined Georgia, Hawaii, California, and Washington D.C. in the finals. Army officer Deshauna Barber from DC went on to win Miss USA 2016. The 22-year-old is a senior at the University of Alabama studying Communication Studies. As a child, Brown lost her father to Melanoma which is why she is passionate about educating people about taking care of their skin, according to her Miss USA bio.

Two Students kayak from Tuscaloosa to Mobile to raise awareness for river conservation in Alabama

Two students from the University of Alabama, Chris Cochrane (Gadsden, Ala.) and Collin Williams (Nashville, Tenn.), recently completed a 340-mile paddling trip from Tuscaloosa to Mobile to raise awareness for river conservation efforts in Alabama, traveling down the Black Warrior River and Tombigbee River for 15 days.  Cochrane, a recent graduate of environmental science, and Williams, a marine science student, wanted to highlight the importance of freshwater conservation to Alabama’s ecosystem, which contains 38 percent of North America’s fish species and more species of freshwater fish, crayfish, mussels, turtles, and snails than any other state in the U.S.

Tuscaloosa’s Fleshner headed to Olympic Trials

Former University of Alabama diver Aaron Fleshner, who is originally from Texas but works, lives and trains in Tuscaloosa now, will be among the more than 100 divers expected to compete for a spot on the USA Olympic Team. He will be among those competing at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis June 18-26.

Tuscaloosa County Chapter of UA National Alumni Association holds wine tasting event

Here’s a way to help students attend college and have a good time while doing so. The Tuscaloosa County Chapter of The University of Alabama National Alumni Association is hosting a membership drive with it’s annual Crimson and White Wine Tasting event. It’s Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 at Spirit’s Wine Cellar at the Shoppes of Lake Tuscaloosa. All money raised from UA alumni fees go toward student scholarships.
