Alabama heads to Theatre Row in New York City

Director Seth Panitch and his production company, Poor Yorick Productions, are making their way to city that never sleeps with “Here I Sit Brokenhearted: A Bathroom Odyssey” at the Samuel Beckett Theatre on Theatre Row in New York City. The production is a part of Panitch’s Bridge Project in conjunction with The University of Alabama that creates an opportunity for theater student to be able to cut their teeth in the professional acting world that began in 2006.

Academy to host technology and career camps

Free summer camps for elementary and middle school students are being offered for the first time by Tuscaloosa City Schools. Parents must register their children in person at the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy, 2800 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The TechXploration Technology and Career Camp is scheduled to be held: … Students will be involved in various activities involving the human body. Mini CPR training, obstacle courses, as well as a healthy lifestyle guide to teach kids how to “fuel” their machine. A field trip to the University of Alabama’s training facility will be part of the camp.
 
UA student to compete on America Ninja Warrior

A Montgomery man is working to bring national recognition to the river region by becoming the next America Ninja Warrior. The show follows competitors as they tackle a series of challenging obstacle courses in both qualifying and final rounds in cities all across the country. Casey Suchocki has his sights set on one goal to become the next America Ninja Warrior. The Montgomery native has always competed at sports from football to cheerleading to wrestling. After seeing the Japanese version of America Ninja Warrior, Suchocki decided there was another sport he needed to master….Suchocki is actually double-majoring in civl and construction engineering and is able to use his studies to help him master the ninja obstacles.

Area schools paying attention to computer science

Computer science plays a major role in contributing to an innovative and competitive workforce. So says Hartselle High School computer science teacher Bucky Garner, whose school district is looking to expand its computer science curriculum. Computer science “is really, really involved in everything that we do,” Garner said. Starting next school term, the Information Technology and Computer Science Academy at Hartselle High will offer five computer science courses, including two that are in the Advanced Placement curriculum. . . . Several of the local school systems partnered with Jeff Gray, a University of Alabama computer science professor who received National Science Foundation grants. The grants allowed him to help craft and connect teachers in the area to the upcoming AP course.

Bolton’s project stands as Gold Award model

However, Bolton didn’t realize her project was so outstanding that Girl Scouts would later use it as a model … recently, Bolton finished her freshman year at the University of Alabama and has founded Inspired Arts, a 501c3 organization to continue her arts camp.

Home sales up across state, so is price

Alabamians bought more homes this April than they did a year ago and they are paying more for them. The home buying activity has reduced the inventory of home down to 29,406, a drop of 10.6 percent from April of 2015 and a whopping 31 percent below the peak in inventory in April of 2008, just four months after the beginning of the Great Recession. That’s the upshot of a new report from the Alabama Center for Real Estate, part of the Culverhouse College of Commerce at the University of Alabama. In April home sales totaled 4,631, an increase of 7.1 percent from April a year ago. Year to date sales were up just over 8 percent.

Peyton Brown, Miss Alabama USA 2016, makes top 5 of Miss USA Pageant

Eufaula native Peyton Brown made the top 5 in Sunday night’s Miss USA Pageant. She was one of 52 contestants competing for the crown in the 65th annual competition held in Las Vegas. She joined Georgia, Hawaii, California, and Washington D.C. in the finals. Army officer Deshauna Barber from DC went on to win Miss USA 2016 … The 22-year-old is a senior at the University of Alabama studying Communication Studies. As a child, Brown lost her father to Melanoma which is why she is passionate about educating people about taking care of their skin, according to her Miss USA bio.

LEND A HAND: UA students raise awareness of river conservation

Two students from the University of Alabama, Chris Cochrane of Gadsden and Collin Williams of Nashville, Tennessee, recently completed a 340-mile paddling trip from Tuscaloosa to Mobile to raise awareness for river conservation efforts in Alabama, traveling down the Black Warrior River and Tombigbee River for 15 days.

University of Alabama – A team of UA public relations students won first place in the 2016 Bateman Case Study Competition in Chicago. The Bateman Case Study Competition is the top national competition of the Public Relations Student Society of America. Student teams must use what they learned in the classroom and through internships to create and implement a full public relations campaign that this year focused on awareness of student veterans.
