Program gives students with intellectual disabilities college experience on UA’s campus

Students with intellectual disabilities are getting the chance to experience what it is like to be a college student. It is part of the University of Alabama’s CrossingPoints’ Summer Bridge Program. Ten students from across the southeast are calling Lakeside East on UA’s campus, home, for the next couple of months. They are taking part in a unique, summer-long, college transition program. “They’re going to go to university classes, they’ll have a few classes that are designed for them, and they’ll do some independent living type things in their dorms, cooking, and laundry, all those types of skills,” said program coordinator, Amy Williamson.

University of Alabama Press has new director

The director of Northern Illinois University Press has been appointed to lead the University of Alabama Press starting Aug. 1. Linda Manning replaces interim director Daniel Waterman. “Linda brings strong experience in the academic publishing world that will be a great asset to the University,” said interim Provost Kevin Whitaker. “She has excellent ideas about developing new directions for the press while building on our already strong reputation. The press serves a key role statewide and nationwide in advancing scholarship and the University’s research mission.”

University of Alabama professor wins Mark Twain Award

A professor of English and creative writing at the University of Alabama, has been named the winner of the 2016 Mark Twain Award for Distinguished Contributions to Midwestern Literature. “I feel really good about the award,” Michael Martone said. “It came out of the blue. I had no idea people were thinking about me so that makes it really special.”

NASA hosts competition for automated mining on Mars

A look at what the future might holding for the mining industry and the future of automated technology was on display during NASA’s Robotics Mining Competition at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida where students from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, earned the top award. The annual contest gives students from across the nation the chance to design, build and then operate robotic explorers in a bin loaded with simulated Martian soil called regolith.
