UA to Hold Spring Commencement Exercises

UA will hold four different commencement ceremonies over two days.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama will hold its spring commencement exercises May 6-7 at Coleman Coliseum on the UA campus.

More than 5,300 diplomas are scheduled to be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students from all colleges and schools.

Students from the Culverhouse College of Commerce and the College of Engineering will participate in Friday’s ceremony, which begins at 6 p.m. Students from the Capstone College of Nursing, College of Communication & Information Sciences, College of Education and College of Human Environmental Sciences will participate in the 9 a.m. ceremony Saturday, while students from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Social Work will participate in Saturday’s 2 p.m. ceremony.

Dr. Jeff Jackson, professor, UA College of Engineering, will serve as the commencement marshal for all three ceremonies.

The UA School of Law will hold its commencement exercise at 6 p.m., Saturday at Coleman Coliseum. Myron H. Thompson, senior judge, U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama, will deliver the school’s commencement address. A native of Alabama, Thompson received his undergraduate and law degrees from Yale.

After graduating from Yale Law School, he returned to Alabama, beginning his professional career as assistant attorney general. He was the first African-American assistant attorney general in Alabama’s history. Thompson was appointed to the federal bench in 1980. He became chief judge in February 1991, becoming the first African-American chief  judge of any U.S. District Court in the state of Alabama.

The ceremony will be broadcast live over the Internet. The webcast will be archived at ua.edu/commencement/, and it will be available for viewing for 30 days following the ceremony.
