TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A University of Alabama student will receive the 2016 Billy Jones Memorial Traffic Engineering Scholarship Award from the Alabama Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.

Ashley McDonald, a junior studying civil engineering from Frisco, Texas, plans to use the scholarship to pursue a civil engineering career focusing on transportation. She will be recognized at the annual ALSITE meeting on June 8-10 in Gulf Shores.

The scholarship honors Billy Jones, an engineer for the Alabama Highway Department and ALSITE member who was killed in a traffic accident in 1999. Jones was an avid supporter of the organization’s Annual Scholarship Auction.

ALSITE was founded in 1973 as an affiliate of ITE to represent engineers in Alabama’s growing transportation field.

Founded in 1930, the ITE is an international educational and scientific association of transportation professionals. ITE has a membership of 13,000 transportation engineers, transportation planners, consultants, educators and researchers and other professionals. The organization aims to integrate technological advances and scientific principles into research, planning, functional design, implementation, operation, policy development and management for any mode of ground transportation.
