UA Eco Car 3 Team set to begin work on car

After a year’s worth of preparations, The University of Alabama’s ECO Car 3 Team is set to begin work on the final stages of their project. The 150 person team spent the past year drawing, designing and implementing a plan to transform a 2016 Chevy Camaro into a more energy efficient vehicle. The team was recently given the actual car to begin working on it. It’s part of the latest U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Vehicle Technology competition.

9 students from south Talladega County receive scholarships to University of Alabama

The South Talladega County Chapter of the University of Alabama National Alumni Association recently held its spring scholarship banquet at Harvey’s on Noble. The guest speaker for the evening was University of Alabama President Stuart R. Bell. This was the 19th year for the local scholarship program, which was started by the late Harry Brown Sr. The local fund has grown to more than $910,000. The chapter has honored 134 students. Nine students were given scholarships this year totaling $50,000. Every year, the earnings from the fund are given away to students from five south Talladega County high schools.

WVUA hires Royer as managing editor
Tuscaloosa News – May 23
Mike Royer, a longtime Birmingham broadcaster, was named Monday as the managing editor of the University of Alabama’s WVUA 23 television station. Royer began his career in 1975 in Terre Haute, Indiana. He also worked as a meteorologist at WBRC and as a news anchor at WVTM, both in Birmingham. “As managing editor at WVUA 23 Television, I hope to tap into my 40-year career to help young broadcasters develop their skills and reach their goals. I’ve known several of the veteran broadcasters at WVUA 23, and I look forward to working alongside them,” Royer said in a news release.

‘That Dog Will Hunt’: Movie making in Tuscaloosa
Tuscaloosa News – May 23
Red light shone through a hazy of artificial smoke in the back of Harry’s Bar on Monday afternoon on Hargrove Road in Tuscaloosa. The camera rolled at the directors prompt and actors played their parts. Carlos Estrada directed his film crew and actors through a scene set in the bar. A forlorn young man sat with his drink. A beautiful young woman attempted to seduce him. The film, “That Dog Will Hunt,” is a production being shot in Tuscaloosa, with the exception of one scene. The filmmakers and actors are products of the school of telecommunications and film at the University of Alabama and most are either recent graduates or are currently students.
 
Local Montgomery Woman Wins BIG on ‘Ellen’ Show

The Ellen DeGeneres show is known all around the world for the giveaways of free cars, and cash. One Montgomery woman got the chance to be a part of the fun and not only did she manage to win something for herself, but also for the entire audience. Meredith Kocan recently graduated from the University of Alabama. One of her graduation gifts included a trip to California to the Ellen Degeneres Show. While on the show she was called by Ellen DeGeneres to play a game where she could win prizes. Meredith won a trip to Dubai, Cape Town, and $2,000 in cash. Not only did she win a prize for herself, but she also won a very expensive prize for the entire audience. The crowd also received a trip to Dubai.
