BIRMINGHAM: University of Alabama taps new leader for graduate school

The University of Alabama has named an administrator from the University of Kentucky the new leader of its graduate school. Susan Carvalho, associate provost for internationalization and interim associate provost and dean of the Graduate School at Kentucky, was named associate provost and dean of the Graduate School at UA. She is scheduled begin her service July 1 and will replace David Francko, who is retiring after holding the position since 2006.

Some churches behave like businesses and should be paying taxes

Especially highlighted under the Presidency of George W. Bush, churches and religious organizations play an important role in offering charitable service to those in need on a local level. This is no surprise in the South where the image of a church on every corner is common enough to be cliché. While national policy should not depend upon the programmatic charity of religious organizations, in providing it they are providing a service, much like a nonprofit would provide a service, to the community. Another similarity that religious organizations share with nonprofits is the obvious and wanton exploitation of tax loopholes for financial gain. UA Law School holds free legal clinic

Happening today, free legal advice in Tuscaloosa. The free legal clinic is available for people who may not have the money to hire an attorney. The State Bar and The University of Alabama Law School are working together on it. Today’s clinic runs from 3 until 5 at the Tuscaloosa County Public Library’s main branch.

OLLI holds open house

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute or OLLI at The University of Alabama held an open house today for summer registration. The program provides mature adults with the opportunity for intellectual stimulation, cultural development and social interaction. It’s member planned and member managed.
