Mike Royer Named Managing Editor for UA’s WVUA 23 Television

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Mike Royer, a 40-year veteran of the broadcast television industry, has been named the managing editor of The University of Alabama’s WVUA 23 television station.

Royer began his broadcast career in 1975 at WTWO-TV in Terre Haute, Indiana before moving to Birmingham, where he worked for WBRC Fox 6 as a meteorologist. In 1990, Royer moved to WVTM where he was the main anchor of the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts.

While at WVTM, Royer was instrumental in the production of newscasts, special reports and news specials that received the Television Academy’s Emmy award, the Radio and Television Digital News Association’s Edward R. Murrow Award and several awards from the Associated Press.

“After nearly a one year hiatus from television news, I’m excited to accept this exciting opportunity at The University of Alabama,” Royer said. “As managing editor at WVUA 23 Television, I hope to tap into my 40-year career to help young broadcasters develop their skills and reach their goals. I’ve known several of the veteran broadcasters at WVUA 23, and I look forward to working alongside them. Whatever our age, whatever our volume of experience, in this business you never stop learning and never stop improving your skills. I’m excited to be a part of The University of Alabama family.”

Steve Diorio, associate director of news and sports for WVUA 23, said he was extremely excited to have someone with Mike’s strong background and years of experience in broadcasting coming on board.

“We look forward to the future here working with Mike and the great staff of professionals we have,” Diorio said. “Our combined experience in the industry allows us to share our experience with our students and staff and make this the best organization for news stations across the country to look for future broadcasters.”
