UA Students Update Capstone Creed

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama students announced during this Honors Week an updated statement of the University’s core values to reflect the importance of promoting equity and inclusion on campus.

UA’s Capstone Creed, developed in 2000 and designed to identify and sustain the core values which are manifest in all members of the University community, was reviewed by the Student Leadership Council and recently approved by UA’s Office of Student Affairs.

The newly adapted Creed reads:

“As a member of The University of Alabama community, I will pursue knowledge, act with fairness, integrity and respect; promote equity and inclusion; foster individual and civic responsibility; and strive for excellence in all I do.”

“I think it’s important for us, as students, to recognize that our personal experience is not universal,” said Mary Lieb, a member the Council and president of UA’s Honors College and its Blackburn Institute. “Embracing diversity and inclusion is one of the best ways we can ensure that people can use their own talents and abilities in the best ways to serve others and themselves.”

“It has been a good experience getting to see different student opinions on the Creed,” said Ibukun Afon, a member of the Council and a senior in UA’s Capstone College of Nursing. “The new components – especially the ‘integrity’ reference and adding the ‘equity and inclusion’ part were important. Adding the ‘in all I do’ phrase personalized it, making it specific to each student and each faculty and staff member.”

The Capstone Creed is a pledge made at convocation by first-year students at the start of the academic year.
