UA names new journalism chair
Tuscaloosa News – April 29
A University of North Texas professor has been named the new chair of the department of journalism and creative media at the University of Alabama. Cory Armstrong, professor and director of the Mayborn School of Journalism, is scheduled to begin her appointment July 15, according to Mark Nelson, dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences.

With graduation looming, many seniors at The University of Alabama are busy preparing for final exams. For a select group of students, wrapping up the semester means presenting the findings from a research project to management at Brasfield & Gorrie. The research project is the result of a partnership that began in September 2015 between Brasfield & Gorrie and The University of Alabama’s STEM Path to the MBA program.

Lottery fight could return in 2017

When Republicans in the State Legislature begin seriously talking about bringing a lottery back to Alabama, you know there’s been a sea change in public opinion — or the coffers are really dry.  My guess would be both. Look for a serious attempt in 2017 although lottery bills have been passed out of committee in both houses … According to a University of Alabama study, the Alabama once had a state-sponsored lottery. In 1868, the Alabama Legislature passed one that required the Gov. William Hugh Smith to appoint a commissioner of lotteries with power to collect a tax on the gross amount of income of such businesses to be paid to the public school fund and “other public projects the Legislature authorized.”

Insurance groups unite to produce tornado preparedness guide

Several state insurance organizations are attempting to help Alabamans better prepare for tornados. The Alabama Center for Insurance Information and Research at the University of Alabama Culverhouse College of Commerce has partnered with the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, the Alabama Department of Insurance and Smart Home America to produce the 2016 Tornado Preparedness Guide & Insurance Tips for the state.

Illinois Student is coming to UA

Senior William Cunzeman is heading off to The University of Alabama to study Aerospace Engineering. Cunzeman is one of 70 seniors at North Boone High School furthering their education after graduation. Students at North Boone High are announcing their commitment during college signing day.

Holt man credited with saving dozens during April 27th tornado five years ago

April Watson sits on her front porch and listens to the sweet sounds of mother nature and thinks about how far she’s come. “When I hear birds singing or the wind blowing, It’s just so quiet and peaceful. What I used to take for granted I don’t take for granted anymore. I think about God’s sparing my life,” Watson said … Reed is credited with saving dozens of lives on April 27th. He’s known as the ultimate first responder. His harrowing story now featured in a documentary put together by a University of Alabama professor called “April’s Hero.”

A new fund is being established to help further neurological disease research. The Memory and Mobility Fund was established with hopes of excellerating research on diseases like Alzheimer’s, which will be an initial focus for the institute. The institute launched the fund during it’s Spring Benefit, which featured University of Alabama Athletic Director Bill Battle. Battle stressed that in order to accomplish major goals, whether it’s winning national championships or finding a cure to a disease, it takes dedicated teamwork.
