University of Alabama students ready for NASA Micro-g NExt competition

Two teams of engineers are preparing for a 22-school NASA competition. The winners will help send astronauts deeper into space with the equipment they design, and will be one step closer to sending people to Mars. One group designs devices to grab and collect samples from asteroids while the other team designs booms (connecting arms) to help astronauts move from space vehicle to space vehicle. University of Alabama students say this is great hands on experience. “I mean, it feels great to know I’m actually doing something that hopefully NASA can benefit from and the university,” engineering student Alex Mitchell. “Basically all our course work has really prepared us for this project,” said UA engineering student Stephen Peter Rowe said.

Virus expert speaks about Zika at UA

A renowned virus expert is warning that it is far to early, to theorize about Zika — because we do not know all the facts. Dr. Michael Oldstone spoke tonight, at the University of Alabama. “I think we know enough to be very concerned,” said Oldstone. “We know enough now to put procedures in place, and we know enough now to know we should have had procedures in place a long time ago.” Oldstone’s presentation — called “Zika’s Kiss: How, When, Where, and consequences” looks at the spread of the Zika virus, ways to control it, and the aftermath.
UA to host free lecture on Zika virus

The University of Alabama is hosting a free lecture on the Zika virus on Tuesday night. An expert on the virus will discuss the virus, its impact, and what’s being done to stop it from spreading. The lecture is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19 in room 127 of the Biology Building. The virus is present throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean. So far, there have been three confirmed cases of the Zika virus in Alabama in people who traveled to impacted regions.

Art therapy class to help dementia patients offered at the University of Alabama

More than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. The deadly disease can be difficult to deal with, for those diagnosed, as well as their family members. Art therapy is a form of treatment that doctors say is on the rise. A special art therapy course is being offered at the University of Alabama. It is a collaboration between the UA Honors College and the Cognitive Dynamics Foundation. It is called Art to Life. It is designed to bring life into those diagnosed with types of Dementia and the students involved.

This is a story about how water data standards, computational hard work, high-performance computing, serendipity and synergy led to an operational capability for nationwide forecasting of streamflow and flooding at high-resolution, in near-real-time. This has been evolving for several years now, but has gone into hyper-drive in just the last couple years … In May 2014, the opening of a new building on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa triggered the sequence of events that is improving flood forecasting throughout the U.S. and the world. The new building is the U.S. National Water Center (NWC), built by the National Weather Service (NWS) and federal agency partners U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).
