Bonner, Parker Named 2016 UA Distinguished Alumni

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama National Alumni Association has named the recipients of its top awards.

The 2016 Distinguished Alumna Award winner is Dr. Judy Bonner, of Tuscaloosa, and the 2016 Distinguished Alumnus Award winner is Tim Parker, of Tuscaloosa.

Bonner is a native of Camden and received both her bachelor’s in nutrition and master’s in food and nutrition from the Capstone, completing her studies at the University in 1973. She received her doctorate in human nutrition from The Ohio State University in 1976.

After graduating with her master’s, Bonner worked as an assistant professor in both the division of medical dietetics and the department of pediatrics at The Ohio State University. She then transferred to The University of Alabama at Birmingham. At UAB, she served as the director of nutrition at the Pediatric Pulmonary Center and as an assistant professor in the department of pediatrics before coming to UA.

During her 34-year tenure at UA, she served in various capacities, including as dean of the College of Human and Environmental Sciences; executive vice president and provost; and as the University’s 28th — and first female — president from 2012 to 2015.

Parker graduated from UA in 1966 with a degree in commerce and business administration. After earning his economics degree from UA, he graduated from the Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management Program.

Following two years of service in the U.S. Army, Parker worked for Lykes Brothers Steamship Co. until 1974, when he began working for Parker Towing Co., where he is now chairman and CEO.

Selection for the Distinguished Alumni Award is based on loyalty and service to the University and the National Alumni Association, character and personal life, professional achievement or success in chosen endeavor, and community service on the local, state or national level.
