UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park Reschedules Knap-in

MOUNDVILLE, Ala. —  The University of Alabama’s Moundville Archaeological Park’s 16th Annual Knap-In, previously slated for March 11-12, has been rescheduled due to forecasts of severe weather. The event is now scheduled for Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30.

A knap-in is a gathering of stone toolmakers and other artists interested in ancient technologies who demonstrate and sell their work. Flintknappers make arrowheads and spear points, knives and other implements from rocks that break like glass — a technology used by people worldwide before humanity discovered how to forge metal.

Other demonstrations include basket making, textile weaving, net making, an outdoor pottery firing and firemaking. Visitors can taste Native American food and engage in educational activities like throwing the atlatl and rabbit sticks, making a shell bead necklace and grinding corn, as well as seeing many handmade items for sale.

UA’s Moundville Archaeological Park is 13 miles south of Tuscaloosa off Exit 71A on I-20/59. Knap-In admission is $6 for children and $8 for adults. Groups are $6 a person with prior reservations. With the exception of special events, educational programs and conference center rentals, Moundville residents are admitted free into the park. Sign up at the park’s admission building to receive your free resident’s pass.
