Terror attacks leave Obasohan with ‘heavy heart’
Tuscaloosa News – March 23
Retin Obasohan, a captain of the University of Alabama’s 2016 basketball team and a native of Belgium, said that Tuesday’s terror attacks in Brussels left him with “a heavy heart” but noted that he would “not live in fear,” whether in America or in Belgium. At least 34 people were killed and scores were injured in bomb blasts at Brussels Zaventern Airport and locations in the city of Brussels early Tuesday morning. The Islamic State (ISIS) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks. “It’s been tough just waking up and hearing that,” Obasohan said at a Tuesday press conference. “I was able to reach my family and friends. My family is good. It was good to see my father’s smile, my brother’s smile when I talked to them. It’s crazy to think that they were here (for Alabama Senior Day ceremonies) just a couple of weeks ago and flew home through that airport.”

Tattoos linked to improved immunity
CBS 12 (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) – March 22
New research shows tattoos may actually make you tougher. Researchers at the University of Alabama say that people with a lot of tattoos have been shown to have a higher tolerance to sicknesses like the common cold. When a tattoo artist’s needle makes contact with the skin, research infection-fighting chemicals rush to the fresh wound to begin the healing process. As people make a habit of returning and adding to their body art, researchers say the body begins producing more of those chemicals to adapt. “It actually makes a lot of sense from what I’ve seen,” Marion tattoo artist Joseph Dunmire said. “I mean, if your body’s rebuilding itself all the time, it can fight against infections and get stronger than it would if its not used to doing that.”

Study links audit staffing to audit quality
Compliance Week – March 22 (Subscription only)
Using a little noticed filing by audit firms, recent academic research has established a statistical link between heavy workloads for auditors and reduced audit quality. The emerging study from professors at the University of Alabama and Louisiana State University finds where audit engagement workload is high, companies have significantly higher abnormal discretionary accruals, are more likely to restate earnings, and are less likely to get a going concern opinion even when signs of distress are present.
