TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s Capstone College of Nursing will host the Joe Burrage Memorial Lectureship featuring New York nursing leader Timothy Shi at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, in the Capstone College of Nursing auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.

“This is a great opportunity for practicing male nurses, and male nursing students, and men considering a nursing career to hear words of inspiration from national nursing leaders,” said CCN Dean Suzanne Prevost.

Shi, who holds a bachelor’s of science in nursing from New York University College of Nursing, began his career working with patients with leukemia and lymphoma at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He later transferred to his current assignment in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

He helped charter the New York City Men in Nursing Chapter in December 2013 and has been president since March 2014. The chapter is now the largest in the nation. Recently, the chapter won the President’s Award for Excellence through the American Assembly for Men in Nursing.

Shi has been involved in nursing’s international honor society, Sigma Theta Tau. After graduation he was elected to be the corresponding secretary of NYU’s Upsilon Chapter, which later won a chapter key award through the efforts of the executive board and members. He was also appointed youth representative for Sigma Theta Tau at the United Nations. Through this role, he has spoken both nationally and internationally at nursing conferences as well as at the United Nations during the 65th Annual DPI/NGO Conference. Most recently, he spoke at the 2015 Sino-US Summit Symposium on Quality Care & Nurse-Patient Communication at SooChow University in Su Zhou, China, on “Enhancing Patient Communication and Quality Care Through Nursing Residency Programs.”

Established in 2015 to honor of Dr. Joe Webb Burrage Jr., who served as the nursing college’s assistant dean of graduate programs until his death on Feb. 19, 2014, the lectureship celebrates and acknowledges the work of male nurse leaders.
