UA to build new adapted athletics facility

The University of Alabama is taking a big step in making athletics accessible to all students. The UA Board of Trustees committed $10 million to construct a two-story adapted athletics facility. It will be located near the Rec Center on campus. That facility will include a game venue for wheelchair basketball, locker rooms and a training room. It will also feature team meeting rooms and a study hall.

Working with at risk youth

Is there a way to prevent kids from making bad choices? A huge question for parents. And we’ve talked so much lately about teens charged with serious crimes. That leaves many people wondering, is there a way to make them change their actions and attitudes? A guest lecturer at The University of Alabama offered options to parents when it comes to helping at-risk youth succeed in school and at home.

Despite only accounting for 5% of the global population, an outstanding 31% of the world’s mass shootings occur in the United States. That sobering statistic from the University of Alabama Department of Criminal Justice was again brought to the forefront on December 2, when a couple killed at least 14 people in San Bernardino, California—the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newton, Connecticut, four years ago. Even worse: In 2015, there have been more mass shootings—defined as incidents in which four or more victims are shot—than days in the calendar year. Since December 3, the U.S. has had 355 mass shootings, according to ShootingTracker.com which tracks deaths by guns in America.

What biz leaders think is the top issue facing Alabama

Alabama business leaders are keeping a close eye on Montgomery. That was one of the key takeaways from a new survey by the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama. The survey of participants in the Alabama Business Confidence Index found that balanced state budget and government leadership was the top issue facing Alabama. That was followed by education, training and a lack of skilled workers, economic and business development and job growth. Health care costs and Infrastructure rounded out the other top challenges.

Alabama to allow deployed service members to vote online  
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Feb. 16
Alabama is leading the nation by being the first to allow deployed military personnel to vote online. The new service is offered to military members and their families while they are serving overseas. Members would have to register online first in order to be able to vote online. After registering they will be able to cast their vote on the website provided. UA’s Military and Veterans Affairs Assistant Director Jason Sellars is excited about this change.

Honors College town hall debates statewide bill to allow concealed carry on college campuses

Monday night, students and adults crowded in the forum room in the Ferguson Student Center to hear a diverse panel discuss the topic of concealed carry on campus for The University of Alabama Honors College’s first town hall of the semester. State Rep. Mack Butler (R- Etowah County), author of the bill to allow concealed carry on college campuses in Alabama, defended his position. Adam Lankford, a professor of criminal justice at the University offered an opposing view. Maria O’Keefe, a graduate student at the University’s School of Law, and Joshua Shumate, a senior majoring in political science, joined Butler and Lankford to comprise the evening’s panel.

Miss University Of Alabama Pageant slated for Saturday

Every year, thousands of girls across the country participate within the Miss America Organization, a scholarship program for young women. As the leading scholarship provider for young women across the country, the Miss America Organization gives young women the chance to pursue their academic, philanthropic and personal goals. The 42nd annual Miss University of Alabama Pageant will be held this Saturday, February 20.

Two Jacksonville High School students presented original research at the Southeastern Evolutionary Perspectives Society conference at the University of Alabama Feb. 13. The students submitted proposals to the society in summer of 2015 and were chosen to present their research among university graduate students, undergraduate students, and professors from around the Southeastern U.S. They were the only two high school students presenting at the conference.
