UA fundraising challenge raises $3.6 million

Triple major Aaron Fenton is one of 13 students on scholarship at the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration who owe part of their education to a scholarship fund that just received $3.6 million. Hugh Culverhouse, and his wife, Eliza, donated $2 million, while 1,000 donors gave $1.6 million all in just 90 days.

University of Alabama diversity center to open next week
Tuscaloosa News – Jan. 28
The University of Alabama announced Thursday that it will open a new Intercultural Diversity Center next week. “The Intercultural Diversity Center was envisioned by students to increase cultural awareness and provide resources for increasing inclusion and collaboration on the UA campus,” said David L. Grady, UA vice president for student affairs, in a news release. “It will be available to students, faculty and staff. “The center will also collaborate with other departments and organizations on campus to provide programming to create a supportive and empowering atmosphere for all members of the UA community,” he said. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new center, located on the first floor of the Riverside Community Center, will be at 6 p.m. Monday.

Impact Alabama to provide free tax preparation service

Online voting for military members from Alabama serving overseas

Alabama is the first state in the country to implement a fully electronic voting system for service members stationed overseas. This new way of voting will replace the absentee ballot. It will allow military members from Alabama, currently serving overseas to cast their vote online. Those who have served said this is a giant step forward in the voting process for service members. “Everybody wants their vote to count,” said Jason Sellars, the Assistant Director of UA’s Veteran and Military Affairs Office.

Stop the Bleeding Forum held at Bryant Conference Center (KIM)

First responders got a lesson on how to save lives more effectively. It’s part of the Hemorrhagic Control Forum at the Bryant Conference Center which teaches rescuers how to save lives by controlling bleeding. However, anyone can save lives by learning the techniques.

UA physician gives lecture on dangers of smoking

A medical school lecture presented by Dr. Alan Blum of The University of Alabama discusses America’s failures on efforts to curb smoking. Dr. Blum, a family physician, has devoted his efforts to countering the promotion and use of tobacco products Also, the alleged dangers and myths of medical marijuana were discussed.

Sixteen movies shown at Campus Moviefest Finale

The Ferguson Student Center Theatre was filled Thursday night as members of the UA community sat wall-to-wall in order to watch short films created by students for Campus Moviefest. Campus Moviefest, the world’s largest student film festival, is a free moviemaking event. It provides students them with the equipment they need to make their film, along with one week to make it. Students must create their film within that week, have it be no longer than five minutes, not violate copyright rules, and have all the correct release forms filled out in order to participate.

UAFC hosts panel on ability

The University of Alabama Feminist Caucus hosted a panel discussion called “Deconstructing [Dis]Ability” on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7:15 p.m. in Ferguson Student Center Room 3107. The panel specifically focused on the topic of ability and ableism, while remaining in the realm of feminism. The panelists included Frances Isbell, disability rights activist and law student; Dr. Nirmala Erevelles, UA professor of social and cultural studies in education; Judy Thorpe, Director of the Office of Disability Services at UA and Beth Overland, Deaf Support Specialist at the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services. Susan Gordon interpreted for Overland. Lindsay Macher, coordinator for the UAFC, moderated the discussion.

Nick’s Kids Foundation to build 16th Habitat for Humanity House

Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban and his wife Terry plan to build a 16th home in Tuscaloosa, as part of the 16 for 16 project with Habitat for Humanity. The 16th house will celebrate the Tide’s victory over Clemson.
