Grady Named Vice President for Student Affairs at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. David L. Grady has been named vice president for student affairs at The University of Alabama, UA President Judy Bonner announced today. The appointment is effective June 15.

Grady currently serves as associate vice president and dean of students at the University of Iowa and has more than 25 years’ experience in higher education administration.

“David Grady has extensive experience in student affairs management and programming including student involvement and leadership, student activity programming, fraternity and sorority life, student union management and other areas,” Bonner said. “His leadership will be invaluable in our continuing efforts to provide our students with the best collegiate experience possible.”

I am looking forward to working with the dedicated staff in Student Affairs, along with our campus partners, to help each student discover their distinctive University of Alabama experience so they can leave here prepared to be successful in their careers and their communities,” Grady said.

Grady joined the University of Iowa in 1992 as director of the Office of Campus Programs and Student Activities. He was named director of University Life Centers in 1998 and served in that position and subsequently as assistant vice president and associate vice president of University Life Centers until 2009 when he was appointed to his current position. He also teaches graduate level courses in the University of Iowa’s higher education and student affairs graduate program.

Grady’s previous experience includes three years at UA, where he served as assistant director of student life from 1985-1988. He also has experience serving as university ombudsman and interim student development specialist at the University of Texas at Austin where he earned his doctorate in higher education administration in 1992.

In addition to his Ph.D., Grady holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Mississippi State University and a Masters of Education degree from Harvard.

Grady replaces Dr. Steven Hood, who has served as interim vice president for student affairs since July 2014.

“Dr. Hood has done an outstanding job leading the Student Affairs division this year. We appreciate his hard work and his dedication to our students,” Bonner said.
