Nelson Named Dean of UA College of Communication and Information Sciences

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Mark Nelson has been named dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences at The University of Alabama.

Nelson has served as vice president for student affairs and vice provost for academic affairs at UA since 2008 and has been a member of the College of Communication and Information Sciences’ faculty for more than 20 years. His appointment as dean is effective July 1.

“As a member of the faculty of the College, Dr. Nelson brings an understanding of the College’s history and traditions along with an exceptional vision for its future,” said UA Interim Provost Joe Benson in announcing the appointment. “President Judy Bonner and I are confident that Dr. Nelson’s vision, energy and administrative skills will allow him to work with the faculty and staff to take the College to new heights.”

Nelson was selected following a national search.

“I am thrilled to be returning to the College of Communication and Information Sciences. With outstanding faculty, staff and students, the College is positioned as a national leader. And, with the support of our president and provost, I look forward to serving in this role to ensure the future growth and success of the College,” Nelson said.

Nelson joined the University in 1991 as a faculty member in the communication studies department of the College of Communication and Information Sciences. He served as assistant dean and then associate dean for undergraduate studies in C&IS from 1996-2006. He also served as director of basic courses/coordinator of academic advising in the College from 1991-1996.

He was named assistant provost for academic affairs in 2006 and interim vice president for student affairs and vice provost for academic affairs in 2007.

Nelson’s area of expertise is in organizational communication and leadership development. He has co-authored two books and authored numerous papers for presentation at the National Communication Association and other academic conferences. He has served on more than 50 University committees covering areas from academic performance to the honors curriculum.

Recognized as an outstanding professor, Nelson received the National Alumni Association’s Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award in 2006, the University’s highest honor for teaching excellence.

Nelson earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from UA and his bachelor’s degree from UAB. Prior to joining UA, he was director of forensics at Murray State University in Kentucky.
