TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama President Judy Bonner has named Dr. Steven Hood as interim vice president for student affairs. The appointment is effective July 1.

Hood has served as executive director of housing and residential communities at UA since 2011.

“Dr. Hood has been a valuable member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team since coming to The University of Alabama in October 2011,” Bonner said. “As we prepare to begin another academic year, I am confident that Dr. Hood, the Executive Council and the entire staff in the Student Affairs division will work collaboratively to ensure that the Alabama experience continues to be extraordinary for the students who are investing their collegiate years in UA.”

Hood said he is looking forward to working with the leadership of Student Affairs “to continue the good work that is currently taking place.

“I’m confident that the division will remain intentional in providing quality programs and services to help our students achieve great things,” he said.

As executive director of HRC, Hood is responsible for housing and programming for more than 8,000 students on campus and providing off-campus housing information for approximately 27,000 students. He also supervised the Community Service Center from August 2012 until December 2013.

Hood came to UA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he served as assistant vice chancellor for student housing from 2010-2011 and director of housing and residential life from 2003-2011. He began his career in student affairs as residence life area coordinator at Samford University from 1999-2003.

Hood earned his doctorate at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2010, his master’s degree at Troy University in 2000 and his bachelor’s degree at the University of West Alabama in 1995.

He replaces Dr. Mark Nelson, who was recently named dean of the UA College of Communication and Information Sciences.
