UA Wins 2013 Beat Auburn, Beat Hunger Competition

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama won the 2013 Beat Auburn Beat Hunger Food Drive by collecting 299,398 pounds of food to top Auburn University’s collection of 169,702 pounds of food.

UA’s collection is an increase over last year’s total of 266,737 pounds.

“I am extremely proud of all of the members of the Capstone community,” said Courtney Chapman Thomas, director of UA’s Community Service Center. “Our students, faculty, staff, local community members and alumni have stepped up to fight food insecurity in Alabama. Their efforts truly make a difference to the lives of the individuals who use the services of the West Alabama Food Bank. They are all true and living examples of the University’s commitment to service.”

Now in its 20th year, the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive and Beat Bama Food Drive have collected more than 3 million pounds of nonperishable food for needy families in Alabama. This year’s drive ran from Oct. 14 to Nov. 22. UA has won for the ninth time.

All food and money collected from the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive will go to the West Alabama Food Bank. The food bank works with nine counties in West Alabama, serving a population of more than 315,000 residents. The food bank has distributed more than 17 million pounds of food to date.
