TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Eliza and Hugh Culverhouse Jr. have made a gift of $1 million to the Culverhouse College of Commerce at The University of Alabama to be used for scholarships to defray student debt. The college is named for Culverhouse’s father.
“We are extremely grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Culverhouse for this generous gift of support for our students,” said Dr. J. Michael Hardin, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce. “These new scholarships will make a tremendous difference in the lives of students who are struggling to pay for college.”
Culverhouse, an attorney, also is the owner of Palmer Ranch Holdings Limited, a large real estate development in Sarasota County, Fla.
“My hope is that this gift will help reduce the debt loads that some students face when graduating from college,” Culverhouse said.
The scholarship fund will be known as the Eliza and Hugh F. Culverhouse Student Assistance Scholarship. The first scholarships are expected to be awarded this fall.
