Some of the lightest of creatures are helping scientists better understand the genetics behind weight gain. Dr. Laura Reed, a University of Alabama geneticist, is studying the maggots of fruit flies to better understand how specific genes cause some of the fruit flies to get fat from consuming high calorie diets, while other flies are unaffected by their diets.
