UA MIS Program No.16 in BusinessWeek Rankings

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Management Information Systems program at The University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce is ranked No. 16 out of 124 programs at both public and private universities, according to a BusinessWeek survey of students.

Overall, the business school came in at No. 80 among all universities and No. 35 among public universities.

“I want to express my congratulations to the MIS program and its leadership for this tremendous showing,” said Dr. J. Michael Hardin, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce at UA.

“Information, supported by technology and innovation, is the driving force in today’s economy,” Hardin said. “Information alone is not enough. Business must have strategies to use information the correct way, to make it accessible to those who need it, and to guarantee its security.”

Each year, as part of their ranking of the nation’s undergraduate business programs, Bloomberg Businessweek surveys more than 85,000 students at more than 100 business schools and asks them to rate their program’s performance in 14 academic disciplines ranging from entrepreneurship and ethics to marketing and sustainability.

This is the first year the management information systems category has been included in the BusinessWeek rankings.

“This recognition is a testament to our graduates and our students and especially to the great firms that recruit here,” said Dr. David Hale, head of the MIS program. “I think achieving this ranking the first time it has been recognized means our students are being hired by firms that understand the importance of MIS and appreciate the continued progress of our program.”

Hale also noted that the UA-MIS Student Chapter was recently recognized by the Association for Information Systems as the No. 2 Chapter in the Chapter of the Year voting.

This follows the group’s recognition as Chapter of the Year last December at the International Conference on Information Systems in Shanghai.

Hale said the recognition and continued improvement of the program was the focus of a just-concluded MIS Executive Forum.

Firms represented include: Accenture, Alfa, AT&T, Atlanta Falcons, AutoZone, Bentley Systems, Books-a-Million, CGI Consulting, Cliffs Natural Resources, CTS Consulting, dunnhumby, E&Y, Energen, Equifax, Flip, General Motors, HP, Lowe’s, Procter & Gamble, Regions, ThyssenKrupp, Southern Co., The Home Depot, Unum and Wal-Mart.

Last year these partners provided more than 140 scholarships to UA MIS students.
