Program teaches tech skills to seniors
Tuscaloosa News – July 16
…For older people in West Alabama who haven’t acquired the technical savvy to navigate their way around social networking media easily, there is the Social Network Technology Initiative. Director Brian Maloney, a fourth-year University of Alabama doctoral student, started the nonprofit organization in April for “late life learners” who want to expand their technological knowledge… “We want to improve computer literacy outreach in rural areas,” Maloney said…The program is being piloted in Linden, and the goal is to bring it to the Tuscaloosa community and the University of Alabama with the help of the College of Social Work and the College of Nursing. Through the Social Network Technology Initiative, high school students, community leaders and some older adults from Linden volunteer to teach computer lessons to people at the Seniors Center. “It’s not only about using a computer, but it’s expanding their knowledge about how the computer can enhance their quality of life,” said Michelle Piper, marketing coordinator for the initiative and a second year UA doctoral student…
