EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

The Center for Teaching and Learning is celebrating National Tutoring Week today through Oct. 9. This week is intended to honor 28 outstanding tutors for their exceptional work and dedication in delivering high quality academic support services to undergraduate students at UA. The Women’s Resource Center is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the third annual Breast Cancer Tree of Honor and Remembrance month-long display and the Susan G. Komen On the Go mobile experience. The Women’s Resource Center will set up four Breast Cancer Awareness Trees of Honor and Remembrance across campus for the UA community to write messages on pink ornaments to remember those who have lost their lives to or survived breast cancer. The October Brown Bag Lecture Series will be held Oct. 7 at 12:30 p.m. in 308 Manly Hall. Master’s students Amy Brock-Reed and Annie Herlocker will lead a discussion on women in the book arts. This event is sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center and the department of women’s studies. More information: Kristen Robinson at 348-5040.

UA will celebrate Homecoming Week Sunday, Oct. 11, through Saturday, Oct. 17, with the 2009 theme “A Return to Glory.” The bonfire and homecoming pep rally are set for Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. on the UA Quad. The Homecoming Parade will take place Saturday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m., going from downtown Tuscaloosa to the UA campus with Richard Todd, former UA All-American quarterback, as Parade Grand Marshal. The highlight of the week will be the UA football game against South Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive, sponsored by the UA Community Service Center, will begin Tuesday, Oct. 13, with an event from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza that includes entertainment and a chili cook off featuring local restaurants. The month-long competition challenges students and fans of both schools to raise more canned food and cash donations for their local food bank before Nov. 19. UA won the competition in 2007 and 2008. Eligible undergraduates may apply to the McNair Scholars Program, a federally-funded TRIO program which helps prepare students for doctoral study. Eligibility criteria include undergraduate status and enrolled at UA or Stillman College; U.S. citizen or permanent resident; either (1) a first-generation college student with a qualifying (low) income level and/or (2) a member of a group that has been historically underrepresented in graduate education (including African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, Native Eskimos, certain Pacific Islanders); have completed at least 60 semester hours prior to summer 2010; have at least a 3.0 GPA; demonstrate potential for doctoral study (as evidenced in application, transcript, letters of recommendation, and—for finalists—an interview). Applications and information may be downloaded at the McNair Web site. Applications are due in 303 Lloyd Hall by 4:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6.

Crimson Ride will run a reduced schedule for fall break on Oct. 8 and 9. Eight buses will run from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. covering all routes. Also, 348-Ride will have limited service when the buses are not in service, and 348-Ride Express will not operate during fall break.

Seasonal flu shots and the flu mist are available at the Student Health Center by appointment or walk-in. To request an appointment, click on the Medfusion button on your MyBama page or call 348-2778. The Student Health Center will also be offering seasonal flu shots at Ridgecrest South Dormitory on Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 6:30–8 p.m. and at Tutwiler Dormitory on Wednesday, Oct. 21 from 6:30-8 p.m. Cost will be $20 and all charges will be applied to your student account with the University. Campus services including eLearning, myBama, off-campus Action Card vendors, most UA Internet access (including wireless), faculty and staff e-mail and Banner will be unavailable starting Saturday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m., continuing through Sunday, Oct. 11, at noon. Also, My Football Ticket will be down until 3 p.m. However, Dominos Pizza will continue to honor Action Card purchases during the down time. The Medical Center, ResNet and a limited number of critical services will remain online during the upgrade of the Office of Information Technology’s data center. Student e-mail and on-campus Action Card services will operate normally. The UA Police Department will have continuous access to emergency services during the scheduled downtime. Books for the Black Belt is looking for student volunteers to get involved. This project aims to provide one book for every child in the Black Belt, which includes some of the poorest counties in the United States. More information: booksforblackbelt@gmail.com.

Bama Dining is conducting a survey to better understand UA campus lifestyles and preferences. By sharing your thoughts, you will help Bama Dining gain valuable insight to help improve the overall campus dining experience. The University Supply Store wants to buy your old clickers. You may take your old clicker to the buy-back window at the Ferguson Center or Tutwiler Hall locations of the SUPe Store and get $10 in return. Any student who turns in an old EInstruction clicker is eligible to participate. The deadline is March 31, 2010.

Share your ADHD story. A group of researchers on campus is looking for students to share their experiences with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. More information: Brad Langston.

Sigma Gamma Rho sorority will collect Box Tops for Education throughout the semester. The box tops will be given to a local school. Please remove box tops from any approved product and give them to a member of the organization. More information: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

The XChange, a program through the Community Service Center, aims to provide meaningful volunteer and social activities for its freshmen members. Parent Ambassador applications are now available online. Applications are due to the Office of Parent Programs in 230 Ferguson Student Center by 5 p.m. on Oct. 23.
