PGA golfer Boo Weekley designates the University of Alabama to receive a $30,000 grant to teach students to play golf
Birmingham News – July 17
PGA golfer and Alabama football fan Boo Weekley, who began play Thursday at the British Open three strokes off the lead, has designated the University of Alabama to receive a $30,000 grant to teach students to play golf. The new class, “Beginning Golf,” will be taught through the department of kinesiology’s basic physical education program and already is full, university officials said this week. The for-credit course is backed by the grant from the PGA’s Play Golf America University program. Under the program, golfers who played on a U.S. Ryder Cup team designate schools to receive the assistance…The class at UA will be taught at Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, said Matt Curtner-Smith, head of the kinesiology department. “Our main goals are to get more college students involved in the game of golf and to teach them how to play. This goal is also to help students personally and professionally,” he said in a prepared statement. In a statement posted on its Web site, officials with the PGA program said it’s intended to help students use golf as a tool for fitness and business networking. Students who take the class at UA will take group lessons and play in a scramble. The winners will play in a collegiate tournament in Las Vegas. Students will pay tuition for the course, which the university intends to continue after the grant is exhausted.
