University of Alabama exceeds fundraising goal
Birmingham News – July 10
A seven-year fundraising campaign at the University of Alabama has concluded after raising more than $612 million, exceeding by far its original goal. The “Our Students. Our Future” campaign ended June 30, more than a year after it met its original goal of raising $500 million for facilities improvements and scholarships, the university announced Thursday. UA President Robert E. Witt praised alumni, fans and friends of the university for their contributions. “We sincerely appreciate their investment in the future of the University of Alabama,” Witt said in a prepared statement.  More than 100,000 individuals donated money, including 130 gifts in excess of $1 million each. University faculty and staff donated $11.6 million, and students contributed $289,093, much of which was raised in a student-run campaign, administrators said.  Contributions to the campaign were still being announced last month, when the university said Lewis and Faye Manderson of Cordova donated $9 million to the university’s business school, bringing their total contribution during the campaign to $12 million.  The Mandersons were the first individuals to make a single donation totaling $1 million to the school, in 1987.  Co-chairs of the campaign’s steering committee included C. Kemmons Wilson Jr. of Memphis, Carl and Ann Jones of Birmingham, and James P. Hayes Jr. of Birmingham, who died during the campaign.
