TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A summer program at The University of Alabama, funded by the National Science Foundation, is helping prepare the next generation of chemists and scientific researchers.
The UA department of chemistry is hosting the Research Experiences for Undergraduates/Teachers program under the direction of Dr. John Vincent, professor of chemistry, and Dr. Stephen Woski, associate professor of chemistry.
Top undergraduate students and high school teachers with strong backgrounds in chemistry are invited to come to the UA campus for 10 weeks during the summer to work with UA faculty in their research group and to take part in informal seminars and educational activities.
The 2009 participants and their UA faculty mentors include:
Breannie Charles, a Xavier University student who is working with Dr. Silas Blackstock on “Attaching Charge Storage Molecules to Metal Oxide Surface.”
Cody Corbin, a UAB student who is working with Dr. Kevin Shaughnessy on “Organometallic Catalysis in Organic Synthesis.”
Brittney Cousin, a University of West Alabama student who is working with Dr. Shane Street on “Chemical Synthesis of CoPt and Other Magnetic Nanoparticles.”
Peter Crisologo, an Asbury College student who is working with Dr. Laura Busenlehner on “Heavy Metal Binding by DNA Repair Protein MutM.”
Amber Grace, a Tuskegee University student who is working with Dr. John Vincent on “Using a Chromium (III) Complex as a Drug for Insulin Resistance.”
David Johnson, a Union College student who is working with Dr. Michael Jennings on “Synthesis of Natural Products.”
Andrew Larkins, an Erskine College student who is working with Dr. Joseph Thrasher on “New Directions in Fluorous Media: Separation and Catalysis.”
Brittney Metts, a Kentucky Wesleyan College student who is working with Dr. Carolyn Cassady on “The Use of Proton Transfer Reactions to Explore Mass Spectrometry Dissociation of Proteins as a Function of Charge State.”
Kristin Shirley, a Jacksonville State University student who is working with Dr. Stephen Woski on “DNA-binding Molecules.”
Breena Stoner, a University of Central Florida student who is working with Dr. Robin Rogers on “Using Ionic Liquids to Facilitate the Preparation of Advanced Renewable Biocomposite Materials.”
Michele Stover, a William Carey University student who is working with Dr. David Dixon on “Computational Chemistry Studies of Amino Acid Acidities.”
Aaron Thomas, a Georgia Southern University student who is working with Dr. Robert Metzger on “Rectifiers and Gold Nanoparticles.”
Felicia Briggins, a high school teacher from Greensboro High School-East who is working with Dr. John Vincent.
Shari E. Jones, a high school teacher from Amelia Love John High School who is working with Dr. Shanlin Pan.
Jacqueline White, a teacher from Southview Middle School who is working with Dr. Robin Rogers.
Brenda O’Neal and Leigh McKenzie, high school teachers from Eufaula City Schools who are working with Dr. Martin Bakker.
