UA Engineering Professor Selected to Attend Engineering Summit in Spain

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Pauline Johnson, associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at The University of Alabama, was recently selected to attend the Women’s International Research Engineering Summit, June 2-4, in Barcelona, Spain.

The Summit, known as WIRES, is the first international summit for women who are interested in pursuing international collaborative research opportunities. The main objective of the summit is to enable meaningful and sustainable research exchanges between female engineers from around the world while identifying issues faced by females pursuing careers in engineering that could benefit from a global strategy.

Participants chosen to attend the summit will focus on sustainable energy systems, micro and nano technology, and simulation-based engineering. In addition, engineers will discuss recent research findings, best practices, research networking and the possibility of international collaborations.

Fifty female engineers from the United States and 50 female engineers from other countries representing various engineering disciplines and a wide range of institutions will attend. Johnson was selected out of more than 236 applications.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,300 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last seven years, students in the College have been named USA TodayAll-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
