UA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team Takes Home Tournament Win; Final Home Game Feb. 15

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team won the Rocky Mountain Invitational in Denver, Colo., on Feb. 9, bringing their season record to 28-2.

The UA team is ranked third in the women’s division of the NWBA. Their final home game will be Friday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center against the University of Missouri.

The Crimson Tide played the first game of the Denver tournament against the top-ranked University of Illinois. The Alabama defense started the game solidly and held Illinois to only 17 first-half points. Illinois played well throughout the second half until Alabama eventually pulled away for a win of 54-36 over the Illini. UA’s Karla Tritten lead in scoring with 15 points and 9 rebounds.

In the second game of the tournament, UA played against host Denver. UA’s defense was the story of the game again as they held Denver to 11 first-half points and won 68-27. UA had six players score in double figures in the game with Erica Moyers leading the way at 12 points, followed by Mary Allison Milford, Meredith Jett, Desiree Miller, Katie Harnock and Tritten, all with 10 points.

UA played against second-ranked Phoenix in the final game of the tournament. The Tide was able to knock off Phoenix winning the tournament with a score of 60-27. Tritten, Stephanie Wheeler and Harnock again paced Alabama in scoring with 14, 12 and 10 points respectively despite not playing most of the second half.

In their last home game of the season, Alabama will be playing without the services of starters Wheeler, Milford, Miller and Alana Nichols who are representing the U.S. National Team in Osaka, Japan, until Feb. 17.
