UA Students Receive Structural Engineering Scholarships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Structural Engineers Association of Alabama recently awarded two University of Alabama engineering students with $1,000 scholarships in an effort to promote structural engineering education among students.

Tim Meyer, a senior majoring in civil engineering from West Blocton, was a recipient of one of the scholarships. Meyer serves as an engineering technician with Almon Associates Inc. where he completes drafting for various structural designs. At the University, Meyer is a member of several honor societies, including Golden Key, Gamma Beta Phi, Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon.

Mason Peterson, a senior majoring in civil engineering from Homewood, was another recipient of the scholarship. After completing a co-op program with Brasfield and Gorrie L.L.C., Peterson worked with LBYD Inc. where he assisted engineers with structural projects. Peterson is a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Those eligible for the SEAoAL scholarship include rising juniors, seniors and graduate students enrolled in an ABET accredited civil engineering program with an emphasis on structural engineering.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has about 1,900 students and nearly 100 faculty. In the last seven years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
