UA Students Awarded State Tourism Scholarships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A select group of students in The University of Alabama College of Human Environmental Sciences recently received Alabama Hospitality and Tourism Scholarships during the 2007 Governor’s Conference on Tourism.

The UA students, majoring in restaurant, hotel and meetings management, included:

-Maura Katherine Edwards of Madison received a $1,600 scholarship. She is a 2nd Lt. in the Alabama State Guard and serves as an assistant operations officer. A junior at UA, she is currently developing an event plan for the State Guard Association of the United States 2008 Annual Convention to be held in Huntsville.

-Libby Green of Tullahoma, Tenn., received a $1,000 scholarship. A junior, she has worked as an event assistant at the UA Ferguson Student Center and is president of the UA Hotel and Restaurant and Convention Association (HARACA).

-Kimberly Anne Singer of Garden City, N.Y., received a $1,000 scholarship. She has worked as an intern at the Omni Corpus Christi Hotel in Texas. A junior, Singer is a member of the UA Swimming and Diving Team, the Student Academic Advising Committee and she plans to become an athletic programmer/planner after graduation.

-Jane B. Fuller of Joplin, Mo., was awarded an $800 scholarship. Fuller is the social chairman for Phi Mu Sorority in charge of planning all social functions on and off campus, responsible for booking venues, bands, catering and transportation. A junior, Fuller plans to work as an event coordinator focusing on sales management.

-Allison Brooke Plemons of Hoover received a $500 scholarship. A senior, Plemons has worked in the restaurant and hospitality business for seven years, recently at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort as a supervisor. She is currently completing an internship with the food service and event planning company, About Thyme Catering Inc. She plans to become a certified wedding specialist.
