UA Engineering Student Receives HENAAC Scholarship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Agustin Tristan, a University of Alabama senior majoring in industrial engineering from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, was recently awarded a scholarship from the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference.

The $3,000 award recognizes Tristan’s academic achievement, philanthropic participation and leadership within the Hispanic engineering community.

At the University, Tristan is a member of UA’s racquetball team, which has placed first in the Intercollegiate National Championship for three years. He is active in founding UA’s chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Tristan also serves as the leader of the International Peer Advisory Council and is a member of Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engineering Honor Society, the National Society of Collegiate Engineers, and the Institute of Industrial Engineers.

HENAAC aims at educating and motivating students in underrepresented communities to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. It was established in 1989 as a means of identifying, honoring and documenting the contributions of outstanding Hispanic American science, engineering, technology and math professionals.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has about 1,900 students and nearly 100 faculty. In the last seven years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
