UA Creative Campus Grand Opening to Showcase Student Work, Renovated Maxwell Hall

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Creative Campus Initiative will highlight student work, the initiative’s newly renovated Maxwell Hall headquarters and plans for the future in a Grand Opening event Friday, May 4 from 4-6 p.m. in Maxwell Hall.

Dr. Malcolm Portera, chancellor of The University of Alabama System, and Johnnie Aycock, president of the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce, will be among the guest speakers at the opening.

“The event will reflect the year’s activities, honor our interns’ accomplishments, and thank our many new partners for their support,” notes Dr. Scott Bridges, Creative Campus director.

The UA Creative Campus Initiative is an umbrella organization designed to expand the definition of creativity and its uses through programs in Creative Community, Creative Economy, Creative Leadership and Creative Education. Creative Campus functions at UA as an interdisciplinary, student-centered organization.

“With the help of Michelle Lee, instructor in the UA College of Human Environmental Sciences, Dr. Lazer [UA associate provost] and I have strived to create a space that offers a physical vision for collaborative projects,” Bridges explained.

Student art on display will include a model of the proposed Tuscaloosa Riverwalk Memorial to Fallen Workers that includes part of an I-beam from the 9-11 Twin Towers. Another innovative project displayed May 4 will be prototypes of two bike rack/art racks made from recycled materials.

“Many of the projects done by Creative Campus students will potentially be of use to the wider community. We’re seeing scholarship in action – students are taking a set of skills and knowledge and applying them in other areas,” Bridges said.

Creative Campus student interns will be on hand to discuss their computer portfolios and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will officially open the newly renovated Maxwell Hall as the Initiative’s campus home. There will be several video and visual presentations and demonstrations of student work inside and outside the historic building.

Maxwell Hall, the UA Creative Campus building, is now used for honors classes, student interns, a gallery and administration of the initiative.

The event is free and open to the public.
