UA Students Take Top Honors in Theatre Competition

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A group of nine students from The University of Alabama department of theatre and dance recently participated in the Kennedy Center America College Theatre Festival for Region IV in Americus, Ga., taking top awards in several events.

UA graduate student Ronnie Chamberlain of Wenatchee, Wash., won the Alcone Makeup Fellowship for the second year in a row. Her winning entry for makeup designs for “The Three Penny Opera” was seen on the UA stage this past fall.

Chamberlain and her faculty mentor, Donna Meester, will travel to Washington, D.C., in April where Chamberlain will participate in workshops and present her work at the Kennedy Center. Chamberlain is one of eight students in the nation to receive this honor.

UA had entries in the SETC-David Weiss (classroom projects) division as well as the national Barbizon and Alcone Makeup competitions.

Graduate student Micheal Waid of Gadsden received honorable mention in the Barbizon competition for his costume designs for “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” a play that was produced on the UA stage last spring.

Chamberlain took second place and a cash award in the SETC-David Weiss competition for her costume designs for “The Love for Three Oranges.”

The group from UA participated in a number of workshops, portfolio reviews and competitions at the festival. More than 1,200 students from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia attended the event.
