UA Student in Top 10 for Prestigious Journalism Internship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama senior Tiffany Schwarz of Huntsville is one of 10 finalists who will compete in “The Intern,” a competition for premier journalism internships sponsored by the Society of News Design.

Schwarz is a visual journalism major and graphic design minor. She is also the managing editor of The Crimson White UA student newspaper, president of the Society of News Design UA chapter, and a member of the Student Executive Council in the UA College of Communication and Information Sciences.

She is currently interning at The Asbury Park Press in Neptune, N.J.

Some 29 journalism students entered and 10, including UA’s Schwarz, have moved on to the next round. Schwarz and other finalists will compete in various areas on Aug. 27-Sept. 3 to decide the final three contestants. The Crimson White is sponsoring Schwarz in the competition.

The final three contestants will win a guaranteed internship for the summer of 2007 at one of the following newspapers: The Orlando Sentinel (Fla.), The Arizona Star Republic (Ariz.), or The San Jose Mercury News (Calif.). All three newspapers are known internationally for their design.

The competition will be held at a workshop in Orlando. The top three finalists will be selected and will face off in a “Design Bowl” during an awards dinner when the winner will be crowned.
