TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. Robert W. Ingram, Ross-Culverhouse Endowed Chair of Accountancy and senior associate dean of The Culverhouse College of Commerce at The University of Alabama, has been selected to receive the 2006 Cornelius E. Tierney/Ernst & Young Research award presented by the Association of Government Accountants.
Founded in 1950, the Association of Government Accountants is an educational organization dedicated to improving public financial management. AGA has been instrumental in developing accounting and auditing standards and in generating new concepts for the effective organization and administration of financial management functions. AGA also conducts independent research and analysis of all aspects of government financial management. These studies have led AGA to be recognized as a leading advocate for improving the quality and effectiveness of government fiscal administration.
Recipients of the award are nominated by AGA chapters, individuals or government units. Each nominee must have at least 15 years of continuous contribution to governmental financial management either through direct research and/or through encouragement and support of others engaged in government financial management research.
Ingram, a former member of AGA, was nominated by Dr. Earl Wilson, professor emeritus from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Accountancy.
For Wilson, nominating Ingram was an easy decision. “Rob has been recognized as one of the top 15 accounting researchers in the U.S. Much of his published research has focused on issues in governmental accounting and finance,” Wilson said. Ingram is recognized as one of the leading researchers in governmental capital markets research, having made many of the early contributions in that area beginning more than 20 years ago, Wilson said. “He is richly deserving of the award,” he added.
Dr. J. Barry Mason, dean of the Culverhouse College of Commerce, agreed with Wilson. “Rob is deeply deserving of this recognition by his peers,” said Mason. “He is a rare combination of excellence in the instructional area, in the highest levels of scholarship, and in leadership.”
Ingram received his doctorate from Texas Tech and is a certified public accountant. He has been at UA since 1985. During that time, he has served in several capacities including director of the Culverhouse School of Accountancy, before becoming senior associate dean in 2001.
The award will be presented at AGA’s 55th Annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition in San Diego this summer.
