Update Advisory Concerning Hurricane Katrina from

The University of Alabama will close at noon today, Monday, Aug. 29, 2005 due to expected severe weather associated with Hurricane Katrina. Classes are canceled beginning at noon today. At 6 a.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, officials will announce the re-opening time for Tuesday. Information will be communicated via area media, campus-wide e-mail, the ua.edu Web site, voice mail notices, and by phone at 205-348-4500. Essential personnel should check with their supervisors concerning their schedules.

On-campus residence halls and apartments will remain open. Every effort will be made to provide essential services during this time. The University’s Emergency Response Group will continue to work with the Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency to monitor the situation and provide necessary information and updates for the University community.

Storm Safety Information for Students

Be prepared in advance:

  • Have flashlights with batteries ready; a radio with batteries will be helpful if power is out.
  • Have snacks on hand.
  • Park your car on high ground several hours before the storm is expected to arrive in the Tuscaloosa area.
  • Secure computers and electronic equipment.
  • Pick up or secure loose items around residences.

During and after the storm:

  • Stay in your residence hall, apartment or house; be prepared to move to lower levels of buildings if necessary
  • Bama Dining facilities expect to be open, although menu selections may be limited.
  • In case of emergency, call the University Police Department at 348-5454.
