UA Student Chosen for Builders and Contractors Fellowship

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.–Aaron Quick, a University of Alabama senior majoring in civil and environmental engineering, was recently selected to attend the Associated Builders and Contractors Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., on June 6-9, 2005.

As the ABC Region Four student representative, Quick will be one of only seven individuals from more than 1,000 student members nationwide who were selected to attend this event. Quick was the only student selected in the state of Alabama.

Students selected for the Fellowship will build relationships with ABC members and board representatives, develop a better understanding of the legislative and regulatory process and how it affects the construction industry, and gain exposure to the critical issues directly impacting construction today.

Quick, a founding member of UA’s student chapter of ABC, was selected because he takes initiative, displays outstanding leadership skills and demonstrates active involvement with UA’s ABC chapter. He recently participated in the chapter’s efforts in building a pedestrian bridge for the YMCA over Hurricane Creek.

Quick, a resident of Birmingham (35242), has participated in co-op education with B.L. Harbert International LLC. He has previous construction and leadership experience in the Naval Reserves as part of the Seabees. Additionally, Quick served as regional service manager of a local heating and air conditioning company.

The Trimmer Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds to support education and training efforts through ABC, its chapters and other entities, has allocated funds to award these Fellowships to students.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became the first university in the state to offer engineering classes and was one of the first five in the nation to do so. Today, the College of Engineering has about 1,800 students and more than 95 faculty. It has been fully accredited since accreditation standards were implemented in the 1930s.
