UA Media Planning Board Names Student Leaders

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Media Planning Board has named new student leaders for its publications and radio station for the 2005-2006 academic year.

Students selected include:

The Crimson White – Chris Otts of Kenner, La., and Elizabeth de Shazo of Homewood were named editor and advertising manager. Otts, a senior journalism major, was last spring’s news director. He interned with the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire in Washington, D.C., in the fall. He will intern this summer at The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. De Shazo, a senior advertising and Spanish major, has served as a Crimson White account executive. She previously interned with the BLR Agency in Birmingham.

Marr’s Field Journal – Gus Von Hahn-Powell of Madison and Jessica Emrick of Bessemer were named editor and managing editor. Hahn-Powell, a sophomore with an undecided major, served as a member of last year’s layout and prose staff. Emrick, a sophomore apparel design major, has served as layout and art editor.

Corolla – Samantha Hall of Huntsville was named editor for the second year. Brittani Tingle of Madison, Miss., will be co-editor. Hall, who will graduate in December, is a journalism major. Before becoming editor in 2004, she served as student life editor. Hall has done internships with Alabama Public Radio and The Tuscaloosa News. During the summer she will complete a corporate communications internship with St. Vincent’s Hospital, and this fall she will intern at Children’s Hospital, both in Birmingham. Tingle, a junior English major, served as an office assistant for the Corolla. She has also worked on the Marr’s Field Journal as assistant prose editor for two years. This summer Tingle will intern with Alabama Heritage magazine.

WVUA-FM – Graham Flanagan and Sarah Snow, both of Tuscaloosa, were named station manager and business manager. Flanagan, a senior telecommunication and film major, has served as interim station manager since March 2004. A former program director, Flanagan has co-hosted “The Head Rush,” a jam band-themed show, since 2001. Snow, a senior accounting major, has served as the co-host of “Strictly Blue Note,” a jazz show.

Black Warrior Review – Laura Hendrix of Tuscaloosa and Molly Dowd of Fairfield, Pa., were named editor and managing editor. Hendrix, a graduate student in the master of fine arts creative writing program, previously served as managing editor. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and French from Birmingham-Southern College in 2001. Dowd is also pursuing a master’s of fine arts degree in creative writing and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Franklin and Marshall College in Fairfield, Pa., in 2002.

Southern Historian – Christian McWhirter of Caledon Village, Ontario, and Charity Wait Rakestraw of Statesboro, Ga., were named editor and assistant editor. McWhirter is pursuing a doctoral degree in history at UA and earned a bachelor’s degree in English and history from the University of Toronto in 2000 and a master’s degree in history from UA in 2003. Rakestraw is a doctoral candidate in history at UA and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Berry College in 2003 and a master’s degree in history from UA in 2005.

The UA Media Planning Board is a committee of 12 voting members made up of students, faculty and media professionals and 20 non-voting members who are editors of student publications, faculty and UA Office of Student Media staff members. The members of the board are responsible for providing guidance and support to Student Media in order to safeguard the publications’ interests and provide financial support while allowing the publications to maintain their editorial independence.
