New UA Service to Help Victims of Assault, Domestic Violence

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center will be offering a new service for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, thanks to the new Harbor Training Program.

“The Harbor Program will provide training to faculty and staff so they can better serve victims and pass information along to all who need it,” said Adam Miller, WRC campus violence project coordinator. “This will create safe places all over campus where students, faculty and staff who are victims of sexual assault and domestic violence can go to receive assistance,” he said.

Harbor trainees will be able to provide assistance on the steps victims can take after a crime. Those who have completed Harbor training will receive a placard to hang in their offices, creating a network of “safe harbors” all over campus that are easily identifiable to those in need.

Harbor is a program of the Campus Violence Task Force, made up of representatives from the UA Police, Athletics, Judicial Affairs, Black Faculty Staff Association and others. Task force members serve as Harbor trainers, having recently completed special training on the program. Funding for the program is provided through the Department of Justice’s Grant to Reduce Violence Against Women.
