TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Courtney Sanders, a University of Alabama student from Corner, has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the spring semester to study in Egypt at the American University in Cairo.

Gilman Scholars are selected by the Institute of International Education through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State.

Selection is based on the student’s academic performance, statement of purpose, follow-up on the project and potential impact of experience. Diversity of participants, field of study and country selection is also considered. Preference is given to students who have not previously studied abroad.

Sanders will receive a $5,000 scholarship to participate in the Capstone International Programs study abroad term at the American University in Cairo from Jan. 20-June 4, 2005.

Sanders is a junior at UA with a double major in political science and economics, and a minor in Italian. She will be continuing her study of language as well as studying Middle Eastern political science and economics during her time abroad.

At the University, Sanders is a presidential scholar, a Blackburn Institute student fellow, co-chair of the SGA’s voter registration and education committee, and the Impact campus coordinator.
