UA Women’s Resource Center to Hold Campus Events

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Women’s Resource Center at The University of Alabama invites students, faculty and members of the Tuscaloosa community to attend the following events:

The EveryWoman Book Club will meet to discuss the book “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Tracy Chevalier on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m. in the Frances S. Summersell Library at the UA Women’s Resource Center, located on the third floor of Russell Hall. Books for future discussion will be decided upon at the meeting. Refreshments will be served.

The Brown Bag lecture and film series will host guest speaker, Mandy Dockery, a consumer credit counseling specialist, on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at noon in the Ferguson Forum.

Dockery will teach attendees how to make the most of their paychecks, which will be particularly useful as the holiday season approaches.

The Alliance for Women of Color (AWC) invites students, faculty and staff to bring a dish that represents their culture to its “Cultural Chat and Chew” on Thursday, Nov. 11, from noon-2 p.m. in 21 B.B. Comer.

“This will give women of color an opportunity to share a piece of their cultural heritage while getting to know one another,” Elle Shaaban Magana, group coordinator, said. “The event will be come-and-go, so those interested need not worry if they only have an hour off for lunch.”

The AWC seeks to play a vital role in the advancement of the University through the provision of mentoring for women of color within the campus community, including faculty, staff and students. The group recognizes that women of color across lines of race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, class, sexual orientation, disability and age face unique issues in their professional and academic lives.
