UA College of Human Environmental Sciences Presents Alumni Awards

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama College of Human Environmental Sciences recently presented the Jack Davis Professional Achievement Award to John Rodney Brown of Tuscaloosa; Amy Curry of Houston, Tex.; Linda Godfrey of Vestavia Hills; Lee Green of College Station, Tex.; Linda Newell of Chicago, Ill.; Pam Oldacre Northway of Somerville; and Stella Rainey of Tuscaloosa.

The Jack Davis Professional Award is given annually to outstanding alumni for their professional accomplishments in administration, education, extension, research or business. Recipients must demonstrate that they have advanced their particular career choice through recognized leadership.

Rodney Brown

Brown was recognized for his career achievements in athletic training. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degree in athletic training from UA and has been a clinical instructor for the College’s athletic training education program.

Brown is the head athletic trainer at the UA football program.

Lee Green

Green was recognized for his career achievements in health education and health promotion. He earned his doctorate from UA in 1994 and serves as associate professor of health and safety and director, Center for the Study of Health Disparities at Texas A&M University.

He has previously served on the faculty at UA and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His research and service have primarily focused on minority participation in health studies and reducing health disparities.

Pamela Oldacre Northway

Northway was recognized for her career achievements in restaurant and hospitality management. Northway owns and operates the Little Cove Cottage Bed & Breakfast, located near the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove in Huntsville.

Prior to this, she worked for the Huntsville Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau and coordinated marketing efforts for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

She was a member of the first graduating class with a hospitality management specialization in meeting & convention planning.

Linda B. Godfrey

Godfrey was recognized for her career achievements in dietetics. She serves as child nutrition program coordinator for the Shelby County Board of Education, as well as consultant for the Birmingham City Jail and an adjunct assistant professor of nutrition at UAB.

She received her master’s degree in food and nutrition from UA and has received numerous awards including Child Nutrition Program Director of the Year, Alabama Outstanding Dietitian and the American Dietetic Association Foundation’s Award for Excellence in Management Practice.

Amy Morris Curry

Curry was recognized for her career achievements in human development and family studies. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Central Florida in psychology and microbiology; and her master’s degree in human development and family studies from UA. She received her doctorate degree from The University of Alabama in health education and health promotion.

She has extensive experience working with families of patients at children’s hospitals. Since 1998, she has been responsible for providing child life services for the Cancer Center and Hematology Service at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. She has numerous publications and has received several awards for work.

Wanda Newell

Newell was recognized for her career achievements in human development and family studies. She holds master’s degrees in education and human development from UA; as well as a doctorate in family and child development from Auburn University.

She serves as education program director for the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation in Chicago. While there she established the Early Childhood Development Initiative with the City Colleges of Chicago to improve its teacher preparatory program and child development lab site; promoted Early Childhood Centers of Excellence, focusing on retaining high-quality teachers to work in Chicago’s most needy neighborhoods.

Stella Rainey

Rainey was recognized for her career achievements in interior design. She holds master’s degrees in both interior design and art history from UA. Since 1984, she has been the operational manager for her family’s longtime business, The Little Gallery, a custom framing and print gallery in Tuscaloosa.
