UA to Hold African-American Heritage Month Essay Contest

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center, Marr’s Field Journal, the New College Student Council, and Common Ground are sponsoring an essay contest from Jan. 7-Feb. 9 in conjunction with African-American Heritage Month events on campus.

All UA undergraduate students are eligible to enter. Topics include “African-American Women in Education: Forming and Transforming History,” “As I Am: A Celebration of Strong Women,” and “The Representation of Black Women in the Media.”

Essays should be in MLA or APA format and no longer than 2-6 pages in length. Submissions can be made via e-mail to wrc@sa.ua.edu, or by disk (3.5 floppy, zip or CD).

Students can submit disks to the UA Women’s Resource Center, located on the third floor of the Russell Student Health Center, or to 101 Carmichael Hall.

The winner will be announced and prizes will be awarded at the African-American Heritage Month culminating event. In addition, the winner’s essay will be published in the Women’s Resource Center newsletter, “Our Voice, “the Marr’s Field Journal and New College Review.
