UA Student Named Gilman International Scholar

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Carmen Abigail “Abby” Hall, a University of Alabama student from Birmingham (zip code 35226) has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the spring 2004 semester to study in England at the University of Hull.

Hall, also a UA Presidential Scholar, is a junior majoring in English and minoring in religious studies. She is one of 173 students awarded the Gilman Scholarship out of some 990 national applicants.

“Abby Hall is an outstanding individual who diligently pursued the opportunity to study overseas and to secure scholarships,” said Angela Channell, assistant director of UA’s Capstone International Programs and director of study abroad.

“Ms. Hall has the characteristics any overseas study adviser is looking for when choosing students to participate in exchange programs – flexibility, adaptability, intellectual curiosity, and genuine interest in a culture different from her own. I have no doubt that her semester abroad will prove to be a life-changing experience for her and that UA will benefit from her experience and insight,” Channell said.

Gilman Scholars are selected by the Institute of International Education through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State.

Hall will receive a $2,000 scholarship to participate in the Capstone International Programs study abroad term at the University of Hull from Jan. 6-May 29.

Hall’s other honors include the 2000 Girl Scout Gold Award, being named a Birmingham Woman of Distinction in 2001 and being inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta academic honorary.
